This offseason, Saquon Barkley took the bold step and embarked on a new chapter of his professional life with the Philadelphia Eagles. However, as much as he would have wanted, the star running back couldn’t end things on a good note with his former team, the New York Giants.
Since the move, HBO’s Hard Knocks has launched a series on the Giants, basically covering the events that led to Barkley’s departure. Among these, a few front office conversations between owner John Mara and General Manager Joe Schoen also got leaked, where the two were seen discussing Barkley’s move to Philly.
The running back finally broke his silence on his move during his recent appearance on the Scoop City podcast co-hosted by The Athletic’s Dianna Russini.
I kind of felt like it was kind of a little disrespectful, to be honest. It’s kind of like a slap in the face like, ‘You go see what you are worth, and then if you’re worth that, we’ll see if you’re worth it, and maybe we’ll match it.’Saquon Barkley said about his contract negotiation with the Giants
He further revealed he decided not to re-sign with the Giants after GM Schoen told him to test the free agency market. Fortunately for him, he didn’t have to stay in the market for long as divisional rival Philly quickly charmed him and signed him in a deserving deal of $37.75 million, which can increase up to $46.75 million with $26 million included.
Saquon Barkley unfazed by Daniel Jones’ contract, just wanted fair negotiations
While clarifying the turns of events that brought him to Philadelphia, Barkley also addressed the Giants’ decision to prioritize Daniel Jones’ contract, over his. Contrary to what fans have thought, the two-time Pro Bowler was not frustrated that his contract was not prioritized by the Giants over the quarterbacks or Andrew Thomas or defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence.
I get you have all the leverage, and you’re doing your job, but at the end of the day, can I get some respect too?Saquon Barkley added
He said what frustrated him actually was not getting a fair negotiation as his teammates. This, considering he was one of the best players in the history of the Giants. But now the running back has moved on and will start the season in a green uniform.
